“Known for its natural beauty, Devbhoomi Uttarakhand has always been a center of attraction for films. The relationship between cinema and Uttarakhand dates back to the 1950s. For countless renowned and celebrated filmmakers, Devbhoomi Uttarakhand has been a preferred film shooting destination, having graced the silver screen in numerous Indian and international films.

Not just Bollywood, but Uttarakhand’s regional cinema—films like Sunpat, Moti Bagh, Patal-Tee, and Ek Tha Gaon, which have been acclaimed globally—have carved a unique identity for themselves on national and international platforms.

Since its formation in the year 2000, the state government has consistently encouraged filmmakers from Mumbai and other states to come and shoot their films here. To facilitate hassle-free film production, the Uttarakhand Film Development Council (UFDC) has implemented a single-window clearance system, under which all shooting permissions are provided free of charge within a stipulated time frame of two weeks. This system is helping establish Uttarakhand as one of the most preferred filming destinations.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of shoots conducted by major Bollywood production houses in the state, some of which have turned into blockbuster films. In recognition of these efforts, Uttarakhand has been honored with prestigious awards, including:

• Most Film-Friendly State Award (Special Mention) at the 65th National Film Awards (2017)
• Most Film-Friendly State Award at the 66th National Film Awards
• Best Film Promotion State at the National Tourism Awards 2017- 2018
• Most Film-Friendly State Award (Special Mention) at the 68th National Film Awards (2022).

Uttarakhand continues to attract filmmakers from across India and beyond, offering a shooting destination where the perennial pleasant weather transforms work into a delightful vacation experience.

We take immense pride in sharing that, in recent years, our policies and subsidy processes have been further improved, making it even more convenient and appealing for filmmakers to shoot in the state without any hurdles.

In March 2024, the Uttarakhand Film Development Council launched its new ‘Uttarakhand Film Policy 2024’, with the aim of promoting the holistic development of the film industry in the state. This new policy offers attractive subsidies for feature films, OTT content, web series,documentaries, and short films, along with incentive grants for establishing new cinemas in hilly regions, film cities, film training institutes, and new post-production studios.
